Australian Barbell Company was founded in 1942 as a hobby in Mr. Bill Pole’s garage in Moorabbin. After World War II, the company moved to Clarendon St, South Melbourne. In those early years, Bill’s friend Roy Langford manufactured barbells and dumbbells for him at his small engineering business, Roysen Engineering, located behind a mechanic's workshop in Black Rock. In the 1950s, Roysen expanded to a larger factory in Cheltenham.
Over time, Australian Barbell Company developed a strong reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality dumbbells and barbells. Roysen Engineering continued to supply Australian Barbell Company while also machining components for other industries, including the motor vehicle and construction sectors. In 1989, Robert Langford (Roy’s son) and his wife Denise acquired Australian Barbell Company as part of a diversification strategy. Under their leadership, the company quickly evolved into Australia’s leading specialist supplier of weightlifting and strength training equipment.
Today, Australian Barbell Company—along with its sister business, Roysen Engineering—is owned and operated by the third generation of the Langford family (Robert and Denise’s children) from a large manufacturing and warehousing facility in Mordialloc, Melbourne, Australia. The company is incredibly proud of the reputation it has built over 80+ years, supplying an extensive range of premium-quality products, many of which are Australian-made, with the remainder carefully sourced from around the globe.
